Curb Your Smoking Habit Through Personal Analysis

Contrary to popular belief, smoking is not a physical addiction, rather, it is a psychological one. As evidenced by countless studies, controlling nicotine intake is manageable but overcoming the mental desire is more challenging than expected. 

Though it can be a bit difficult to get out of a smoking habit it is not entirely impossible to do so. Conducting an overall personal analysis is one effective method that can help a person who is looking to stop smoking. 

Starting a Personal Analysis 

So how does one conduct a personal analysis? 

First things first, grab a piece of paper and create two columns. Delegate one column for the reasons for quitting, while the other should be assigned for the causes a person has for getting into the habit.  

As one may have guessed, each column needs to be filled out with the relevant data. Begin by selecting a column, and write down corresponding information. So if you select the section about the causes for taking up smoking, then list your reasons. This could include factors like peer pressure, family trouble, financial matters, etc. Analyze each factor next. And then figure out whether any of these components are still present or applicable to you. Any factor that no longer fits your situation is reason enough to discontinue nicotine use. 

Once you are satisfied with this column, move onto the next one that details the reasons why you should quit. Some of the most common examples are fear of lung disease, terminal illnesses, the possibility of passing it on to loved ones, or even superficial concerns like darkened pigments on the lips, yellowing teeth, premature aging, brittle nails, etc. 

However, it is not uncommon for health issues to be disparaging enough for many people to give up smoking. Countless smokers still operate under the belief that these illnesses can happen to anyone and are not linked directly to their nicotine consumption. Nonetheless, any unusual changes in your health should be noted down as grounds for ceasing this practice. Breathlessness while doing simple tasks, high blood pressure, and chronic coughing are just a few examples.

No matter what angle you look at it, there is nothing about smoking that is beneficial to a person. There are no health benefits, mental gain, or even financial improvements it can provide. If anything, smoking is the opposite. Studies have time and again proven how smoking can be detrimental to a person’s health. Smoking addiction isn’t cheap either, various data has shown how smokers can easily spend thousands to fund their smoking habit. Expenses also go into breath fresheners, teeth cleaning, and of course on the cigarettes themselves. If you look at the numbers, the amount of money you waste on smoking could very well go to other indulgences such as vacations, hobbies, collections, or it can go into your savings. 

Smoking is a practice that can be learned over time. That said, it can also be unlearned as long as you are willing to put in the effort. Idle hands are your worst enemy when you are in the early stages of quitting. Divert your attention by keeping busy with activities that keep your mind and your hand away from reaching for a pack. Painting, knitting, cooking, and puzzles can be helpful options. Giving up smoking is great for your overall well-being and those around you. Ultimately there are more benefits in foregoing cigarette smoking than there are in retaining it.
